Meet the Artisan

Leandro Castillo Espinal
He was born on February 27th of 1988, in the small village of Olinala, Gro., Being the oldest of 3 kids in the Castillo Espinal family, one of his first memories are the artesanias (Mexican folk art) and the smell of the linaloe wood. Due to the fact that his parents started this trade at a really young age, he grew up along with the workshop, where he learned this beautiful art.
During his early years he learned every step, every technique and process required to make each one of the amazing artesanias that this parents (Masters in this art) creates, without quitting his school enrolment.
At the age of 15, he had his first participation in a local contest of his hometown, in that time he was not awarded, but even after that he did not lose enthusiasm to keep on creating artesanias and improving his technique and style. Little by little he became known as a local artisan, promoting his creations to the local tourism.
He kept going with his academic education until bachelors, always keeping on improving and working in this art that got him his first price in a local contest at the age of 23. He was also awarded with one of his greatest prizes, the 1st place in the category of maque and laca (prehispanic decoration techniques) in the Fonart 2017 contest called “the great prize”. He was awarded due to his creation of a chest made with a “rayado-vaciado” (scratch and voiding) technique, with a back shade and dark stripes, mixed with the “dorado” (golden) technique in ochre color, piece that was started and finished in a period of 2 months.
