Meet the Artisan

Miguel Angel Vazquez Gutierrez
Pottery artisan of 26 years old, I was born on May 23rd of 1989 in the locality of San Miguel Aguasuelos municipality of Naolinco, Veracruz. At the age of 6 years old I started to play with black mud, I created animals that I used as toys; when I turned 8, I participated in a contest of my village and I was awarded a prize. After that moment I realized that I wanted to learn more about this beautiful art of our community.
In 2005 I won my first national award, it was a 1st place in The Great Contest of Popular Art (El Gran Premio de Arte Popular), this was a great incentive for me because it gave me the motivation to improve the quality of my work and to continue in the pursuing of other national and regional contest. In all my participations in contests, I have been awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in different competitions such Nacimientos Mexicanos (Mexican folk art representations of Christ birth), The Great Contest of Popular Art, The National Ceramic Award and The Young creators of Mexican Folk Art contest.
It is worth mentioning that I received the state youth award 2013, by the governor of the state of Veracruz.
